The question I’m asking at year end
Recent catch ups with my community have taken on a reflective tone. How has the past year been for you, we’ve asked each other.
I was struck by one colleague’s answer on a recent call. “This year, I majored in…” she began her response and proceeded to tell me what had most captured her time and attention this year.
I loved the framing, so brought the question into my own year end reflection to ask:
What did I “major” in this year?
What I love most about this inquiry is that it places us in a learning mindset, while also requiring us to “bottomline” or get to the ultimate essence of our year.
My own answer to the question: This year I majored in…trusting my abilities as I launched my own business. If I allowed a “minor,” I minored in staying in the moment, professionally as a coach and personally through meditation.
I’ll float the same question to you as you close out the year: what did you “major” in this year?
*This same question can also be asked of organizations and teams. To facilitate as an exercise, invite individual team members to reflect on their answer to the question for your team or organization. Then, bring folks together to share and identify themes across the collective.
